The story revolves around Pooja, a young girl from a small town who has big dreams and doesn't want to be pinned down to all the normal obligations of society. Pooja wants to spread her wings and become the nation's biggest singer. However, her dreams encounter a roadblock when her parents decide to get her married. Hence she runs away from home to pursue her dream of becoming a singer. The story unfolds as 'Pooja' meets the 'Lal' family in Mumbai and enters their household in the disguise of a cook. Her attempts to hide her true identity and at the same time live the life of a cook results in complete confusion and comic mayhem ensues in the lives of all the family members.

A dysfunctional family is in turmoil after the son of a mild-mannered man accuses his wife of having an affair.

Dhanraj (Kader Khan) is a mild-mannered man who is married to a wealthy, petty-minded, and controlling wife (Shashikala). Dhanraj has two sons and a daughter. The elder son Ram (Rishi Kapoor) is married to Seeta (Jaya Pradha); the younger son, Amar (Govinda) is in love with Asha (Farha); and the daughter Uma (Aruna Irani) is married to Lallu Ram (Ashok Saraf). Uma prefers to live with her mother instead of her husband's residence. Mrs. Dhanraj wants Amar to marry a very rich girl so that she can accumulate more wealth through a large dowry. Ram finds that his brother Amar and his wife Seeta are very close, and starts suspecting them of having an affair with each other, he makes observations but is not ready to confront anyone. Ram's suspicions are still not laid to rest even when Amar marries Asha. Ram starts to drink and ends up getting friendly with a childhood friend, Deepa (Anita Raaj).

Chandra, an upcoming lawyer, meets and falls in love with Roopa, a poor woman. After the wedding, Roopa is ill-treated by her in-laws and, unable to stand up to his family, Chandra takes to drinking.

Rambabu is the eldest of four sons in this family. He has brought up his three younger brothers, Shyam, Sohan, and Mohan, with love and fatherly care together with his wife, Sita. Sita has a younger sister, Gita, who also lives with them, is a child-widow. Ram does not approve of anyone refering to Gita as such. Ram decides that it is time for Shyam and Sohan to get married, and he picks their brides for them. Shyam marries Mona, and Sohan marries Sheela. With the entry of these two new wives, the equilibrium of love and respect is disrupted, as both want more control and demand more respect, which leads to clashes and quarrels all round, and changes in the lives of all the inhabitants.

Aditya Dev (Vipul Roy) and Manav Desai (Kiku Sharda) are two policemen who work under Commissioner Gogol Chatterjee (Johnny Lever). They are very different in nature but slowly start to become good friends. Dev falls in love with Aisha Natkarni (Kishwar Merchant), who is a lawyer and Desai is in love Aisha's smaller sister Dolly Natkarni (Shweta Gulati). They both live with Neena Natkarni (Ashwini Kalsekar), their mother, a widow and an old friend of Chatterjee. The story revolves around how this characters make a whole series of entertainment around the different cases the policemen solve with lots of comedy and entertainment for the audience.
